There are some desserts that can instantly transport you to another time and another place. For me, that’s this chocolate haupia pie.Our family loves exploring Oahu when we visit Hawaii with our kids. We drive all over the island to play at beaches, watch surfers, and try new foods.
The North Shore of Oahu is one of those iconic places in Hawaii that is absolutely worth a stop. It’s known as the surfing capital of the world, and it’s a really cool mix of nostalgia and hipster.
One of the most popular places to eat on the North Shore is Ted’s Bakery. While they make a fantastic plate lunch, they are most famous for their Hawaiian pies.
Out of all of their incredible pies, I think my favorite is their chocolate haupia pie. It’s the perfect mix of their chocolate and coconut cream pies. We love getting a slice to share at the restaurant and then grabbing a pie to bring back to enjoy throughout our trip!
It’s been a while since we’ve been able to visit the North Shore, so I decided to try to recreate our Hawaii vacation by making this chocolate haupia pie for my family. Enjoy!

Chocolate Haupia Pie Ingredients:
- 1 frozen ready-made pie crust
- 1 cup milk
- 14 oz. full-fat coconut milk
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- ½ cup cornstarch
- 3 oz. baking chocolate
- ¾ cup chocolate chips
- ½ cup shredded coconut
- Whipped cream in a can
Yields: Approx. 12 servings
How to Make Hawaiian Chocolate Haupia Pie:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Bake crust for 10 – 15 minutes until golden brown and remove from oven to cool down.
In a medium saucepan, whisk together milk, coconut milk, 1 cup sugar over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil and then reduce to simmer on medium-low.
In a separate bowl, whisk together water and cornstarch and add to the milk and coconut milk mixture. Whisk until thick, about 3 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
In a separate saucepan, melt both chocolates over medium heat, taking care not to burn them. Remove from heat.
Pour chocolate into the crust, followed by the coconut mixture. Do not mix the two, but rather, layer them on top of each other.
Refrigerate the pie for one hour.
While the pie chills heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat.
Add shredded coconut to the heated skillet and roast for about 2 minutes, until a majority of the coconut shreds turn into a golden color. Remove from heat.
Remove the pie from the fridge and add dollops of whipped cream around its circumference.
Sprinkle toasted coconut in the center. Serve and enjoy!
Haupia Pie FAQs
If you don’t want to make your haupia from scratch, you can always use a mix. But it tastes better if you make it from scratch (and it’s not too hard!)
It’s like a smooth, creamy coconut jelly that is just heavenly! While it tastes like coconut, it’s not an overwhelming flavor, so it’s easy to pair with lots of things to create tropical desserts. Or just enjoy haupia on its own!
It’s pronounced how-pee-ah.
“Hau” means cool, and “Pia” means arrowroot. Arrowroot is traditionally used for thickening up pies, and some think the “cool” is related to this light and refreshing pie flavor.
