Things to Consider When Choosing a Baby Carrier for Tropical Climates
When you are looking to choose a baby carrier to use in a hot, tropical climate there are several things to consider before making a final decision.
Breathability
The most important thing for a carrier in warm climates is breathability. You want to stay cool.
When you put a baby against your body you are already adding their body heat to yours. Finding a carrier that has cooling features like being 100% cotton or has a mesh panel.
Versatility
Being able to carry your baby in multiple different ways is so beneficial.
It’s awesome when you have the ability to switch from front carrier to back carrier to hip carrier. That means you can find the most comfortable position.
Back Support and Comfort
You don’t think your precious baby is that heavy, but when you are carrying them all day on vacation, your back is going to feel it.
That is why you need to look at reviews specifically about long term carrying and back support.
Compact Design
Remember you are going to have to pack this along with everything else you want in your carry on unless you wear it on your body on the plane.
So finding one that is compact and perfect for travel is necessary.
Frequently Asked Questions About Traveling with a Baby Carrier
For many airlines, you can bring a baby carrier in your carry-on or checked bags without it counting as a separate carry on. You can either wear your baby onto the plane (which is what I usually do) or stash it in your carry on bag.
If you are wearing your baby in the baby carrier, you can wear your baby through the metal detector but you may be asked to do additional screenings for safety.
TSA does recommend that you take your baby out of your carrier when you go through the metal detector and will hold your baby if you need help. But you do not have to if you don’t want to.
Whether you remove your baby from your baby carrier when going through airport security or not, the entire process is simple.
Absolutely! In fact, I always recommend parents bring it in order to save their arms from getting sore while holding a baby. Plus, it’s awesome for calming your baby and getting them to fall asleep.
But, you won’t be able to wear your baby during take-off or landing. That’s against FAA rules.
Pro Mom Tips for Baby Carrying in Hot & Humid Weather
Any time you are carrying a baby in a travel baby carrier, it is going to be hotter because you are combining your body heat with the baby’s body heat.
Here are some Pro Mom Tips to help you stay cooler.
- Place an evaporating cooling towel between you and baby to help keep you both cooler.
- Stay Hydrated. In hotter climates, you need to drink a lot more water and your baby will need to either breastfeed/bottlefeed more. Or if they are old enough, have a sippy cup of cool water.
- Misting fans feel amazing in hot humid climates.
- Consider a cooling neckband to help you feel cooler.
More Hawaii Packing List Items
I know packing for a trip to Hawaii with a baby can feel overwhelming and it’s easy to forget some important items.
This is a good resource for figuring out what to add to your Hawaii packing list for the airplane ride itself. That way you will fly comfortably.
Here are few items you won’t want to forget to pack for Hawaii:
- Reef-safe sunscreen. This is actually the only sunscreen that’s allowed in Hawaii and there are many geared for babies and kids.
- Reusable bags. Hawaii has banned plastic bags, so you’ll want to bring your own. It’s actually one of my favorite zero-waste travel essentials!
- Hawaii beach essentials. There are several items that make life so much easier when you take your baby to the beach. Trust me!
- Beach backpack or tote bag. It helps to have a designated bag that is waterproof and won’t collect sand.
- Swim diapers. If you want to use your hotel/resort pool, your baby must wear a swim diaper. It can be disposable or reusable.
- Rash guards. Protect your baby’s skin by having them wear an SPF rash guard and swimsuit.
Wrap Up
I hope this post helps you figure out the best hot weather baby carrier for your next family vacation.
The most important thing is to order one well before your trip so you have time to test it out and make sure it’s comfortable for you and your baby.
Plus, you’ll want to practice getting your baby in and out of the carrier so it will be quick and easy during your trip.
