What to Listen to While Planning a Trip to Hawaii (Step-by-Step Podcast Guide)

The first time I went to Hawaii, I was 10 years old. My parents and grandma planned everything, and honestly, I just showed up.

That worked great until college, when I had to actually plan a trip myself for the first time.

I was a broke college student, so my friend and I borrowed her parents’ car, crashed at their house, scrounged around for food, and only did free activities. It was amazing, but looking back, I had no idea what I was doing.

Over the years, as I could actually afford things like tours and luaus and restaurants that weren’t just happy hour specials, I started figuring out what was worth the money and what wasn’t.

Now, 40+ trips later, I know exactly what types of activities are worth splurging on and how to cut costs on things I don’t really care about.

But here’s what I wish I had known earlier: you don’t have to read 47 blog posts to figure this stuff out.

Podcasts are honestly one of the best ways to plan a Hawaii trip because you can absorb information while doing literally anything else.

And if you listen to the right episodes at the right time, you’ll make way better decisions without feeling overwhelmed.

This guide walks you through exactly what to listen to while planning a trip to Hawaii, organized by planning stage so you’re not drowning in random information.

Why Podcasts Work Better Than Reading for Hawaii Trip Planning

Look, I write a Hawaii travel blog for a living, so it feels weird to say this. But podcasts really do make planning easier for a lot of people.

Here’s why:

You can listen while driving to work, folding laundry, walking the dog, or doing dishes. You’re not staring at a screen for the 500th time today.

You hear actual experience and honesty, not just generic travel advice written to rank on Google.

You learn what NOT to do before you make expensive mistakes. This alone can save you hundreds of dollars.

You get context that’s hard to capture in a 1,000-word blog post. Sometimes you just need someone to walk you through the decision-making process out loud.

That’s exactly why I created the Hawaii Travel Made Easy podcast.

After the Google algorithm changed and fewer people were finding my blog, I realized so many busy parents were planning Hawaii vacations between soccer practices and theater rehearsals.

They needed information they could absorb without sitting down at a computer.

So if you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the Hawaii planning information out there, here’s exactly what to listen to and when.

Stage 1: What to Listen to Before Choosing an Island

This is the most important stage. Choose the wrong island for your travel style, and your whole trip feels off.

A lot of first-timers don’t realize how different the Hawaiian islands actually are. Maui is not just “smaller Oahu.” Kauai is not just “rainier Maui.” Each island has a completely different vibe, pace, and activity level.

Before you book anything, you need to understand Hawaii basics and set realistic expectations.

Episodes to Listen to First:

Hawaii Travel Tips for First-Time Visitors: Essential Hawaii 101 Guide (Episode 2) | 19 minutes

This covers the foundational stuff you need to know before making any decisions. Things like why you can’t just “wing it” in Hawaii, what the weather is actually like, and why timing matters more than you think.

The Biggest Mistakes Tourists Make in Hawaii (And How to Avoid Them) (Episode 5) | 23 minutes

This episode covers the planning mistakes families make all the time.

Underestimating drive times, overpacking itineraries, not understanding how resort fees work. Listen to this before you book anything so you don’t have to learn the hard way.

If you want even more detail on this, check out my blog post on mistakes moms make when planning their first Hawaiian vacation.

How Many Days Do You REALLY Need in Hawaii (Episode 23) | 18 minutes

One of the biggest questions first-timers ask is “how long should we stay?” This episode breaks down realistic timelines for different islands and travel styles so you’re not cramming too much into too little time.

These three episodes give you the foundation you need to choose the right island and set a realistic timeline.

For more help deciding which island fits your family, my Hawaii Island Hopping Guide compares all the islands side by side.

Stage 2: What to Listen to Before Booking Flights and Accommodations

Once you know which island you’re visiting and how long you’re staying, the next big decisions are flights and where to stay.

This is where families often overspend or book something that doesn’t actually fit their needs.

Episodes About Flights:

Surviving the Flight to Hawaii with Kids (Episode 40) | 26 minutes

If you’re flying with kids, this episode is essential. It covers what to pack in your carry-on, how to keep kids entertained, and what mistakes make the flight way harder than it needs to be.

Direct Flight vs Stopover: What East Coast Travelers Need to Know Before Booking (Episode 62) | 8 minutes

If you’re flying from the East Coast, this short episode explains the pros and cons of direct flights versus stopovers. It can save you money or save you sanity, depending on what you choose.

Episodes About Accommodations and Logistics:

Where to Stay in Hawaii: Resort vs Condo vs Hotel vs Vacation Rental Guide (Episode 38) | 21 minutes

This episode breaks down the pros and cons of each accommodation type so you can figure out what actually makes sense for your family and budget. Spoiler: there’s no one right answer. It depends on your priorities.

I also have a blog post comparing Hawaii vacation condos vs hotels if you want more detail.

Budgeting for a Hawaii Vacation: What to Expect (Episode 16) | 24 minutes

Hawaii is expensive. This episode walks you through realistic budgets for different travel styles so you’re not blindsided by costs. It also covers where you can cut expenses without sacrificing the experience.

Hawaii Travel Tips: Do You Need to Rent a Car? Complete Guide (Episode 11) | 16 minutes

Renting a car in Hawaii is expensive, but sometimes it’s necessary. This episode helps you figure out if you actually need one based on which island you’re visiting and what you want to do.

By the end of Stage 2, you should have your flights and accommodations booked with confidence instead of just guessing and hoping it works out.

Stage 3: What to Listen to Before Booking Activities and Tours

This is where things get fun, but also where families can blow their budgets on tours that don’t actually fit their interests.

Not every “must-do” activity is actually a must-do for your family. And some of the best experiences in Hawaii are either free or really inexpensive.

Episodes About Popular Activities:

Hawaii Travel Guide: Are Luaus Worth It? Everything You Need to Know (Episode 6) | 21 minutes

Luaus are one of the most debated Hawaii experiences. This episode breaks down whether they’re worth the money, what to expect, and how to choose one that fits what you’re actually looking for.

The Road to Hana is iconic, but it’s not for everyone. This episode helps you decide if it’s right for your family and what mistakes to avoid if you do it.

Hawaii Day Trips and Excursions: What’s Worth It (Episode 29) | 22 minutes

This episode covers popular day trips across the islands and which ones are actually worth the time and money versus which ones you can skip.

Episodes About Specific Destinations and Activities:

Pearl Harbor is a must-do for many Oahu visitors, but there’s a lot to know before you go. This episode covers logistics, what to expect, and how to make the most of your visit.

How to Hike Diamond Head Crater on Oahu (Episode 13) | 14 minutes

Diamond Head is one of Oahu’s most popular hikes. This episode covers what to bring, what to expect, and whether it’s actually worth the hype.

Everything You Need to Know About Kualoa Ranch on Oahu (Episode 12) | 17 minutes

Kualoa Ranch is a huge tourist attraction on Oahu. This episode breaks down the different tour options and helps you decide if it fits your family’s interests.

Once you know which island you’re visiting, I highly recommend listening to the island-specific episodes that match your trip. My complete travel guides also pair perfectly with the podcast:

The podcast gives you the “why” and the guides give you the detailed “what” and “where.”

Stage 4: What to Listen to Before Packing and Arriving

You’ve booked everything. Now it’s time to actually get ready to go.

This stage is all about feeling prepared instead of anxious. Trust me, packing correctly makes a huge difference in how your first day goes.

Episodes About Packing:

Hawaii Vacation Planning: Complete Packing Guide for Your Trip (Episode 17) | 25 minutes

This episode covers everything you need to pack for Hawaii, broken down by category. It also covers what NOT to pack, which is just as important.

5 Hawaii Packing Mistakes That Ruin Your First Day (Episode 58) | 11 minutes

This is a quick episode about the packing mistakes that mess up your first day in Hawaii. Things like forgetting reef-safe sunscreen, not packing snacks for the plane, or wearing the wrong shoes.

These two episodes will help you arrive ready to enjoy your trip instead of scrambling to buy stuff you forgot.

My Honest Planning Advice: Listen in Order

Here’s what I recommend: don’t try to listen to all of these at once.

Start with Stage 1 before you choose an island. Then move to Stage 2 once you know where you’re going. Work through Stage 3 as you’re figuring out activities. And save Stage 4 for the week or two before you leave.

Listening in order keeps you from getting overwhelmed with information you don’t need yet.

And honestly? Planning this way is way less stressful than reading 50 blog posts and trying to keep track of everything in your head.
