I need to tell you something that’s going to save you hundreds of dollars on your Kauai trip.
Stop looking at hotels in Poipu.
Seriously. Unless you love eating every single meal at restaurants and doing laundry in your bathtub, a vacation rental makes way more sense.
I’ve been coming to Kauai since I was 10 (my grandmother had a place on the island), and after 40+ visits, I’ve figured out exactly which Poipu properties are worth booking and which ones you should skip.
The South Shore is where you want to be if you’ve got kids.
The water’s calmer than the North Shore, you’re only 13 miles from the airport, and you get way more sunshine. That Tree Tunnel entrance into Koloa is still one of my favorite drives in all of Hawaii.
But finding a place to stay? That part gets messy fast.
You’ve got condos that look identical online but are wildly different in person. Timeshares that might be amazing or might be a waste of money. Resorts that cost $800 a night and somehow still charge you for parking.
So I’m going to walk you through the properties I actually recommend to friends and family, based on what you’re looking for and how much you want to spend.
The Questions Everyone Asks Me About Poipu
“Why should I rent a condo instead of just staying at a hotel?”
Because you’re going to spend $50 on breakfast for a family of four at a hotel restaurant. Then another $80 on lunch. Then $150 on dinner. Do that math for a week.
With a condo, you’ve got a full kitchen. Make pancakes in the morning, pack sandwiches for the beach, grill dinner on the BBQ.
We save at least $500 every trip just by having a kitchen. Plus you can do laundry, which means packing way less stuff.
“Wait, is Poipu different from Koloa?”
Koloa is the old plantation town, Poipu is the beach area. They’re right next to each other.
When you see “Koloa” in a property name, it’s still in Poipu. Old Koloa town was Hawaii’s first sugar plantation and it’s where you’ll grab shave ice and browse the shops.
“Which condos are actually ON the beach?”
Castle Poipu Shores and Kiahuna Plantation. Those are the two where you walk out your door and you’re pretty much on the sand. Kuhio Shores is about ten steps from the water too.
If You Already Own a Timeshare
I have a friend who has a timeshare and honestly, she loves it. No hunting for rentals every year, just redeem points and go.
If that’s your situation, here are the Poipu properties worth using your points on.
Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club sits right on Poipu Beach. Three pools, poolside bar, and you’re steps from one of the best swimming beaches on the island.
What I like about Marriott properties is they give you resort amenities without feeling like you’re staying in a crowded hotel.
The villas have full kitchens and washer/dryers, which you absolutely need for a beach vacation with kids.
They’ve got a poolside bar that serves food (no sit-down restaurant, but Poipu Shopping Village is right across the street). Five-minute drive to the golf course, close to Spouting Horn.
Hilton Vacation Club The Point at Poipu has the best pool for kids. Seriously, my son spent three hours there one afternoon and didn’t want to leave. It’s a 22-acre property overlooking Shipwreck Beach and Keoneloa Bay.
One thing you should know: the beach right at The Point is rocky and not great for swimming.
You’ll want to drive to Poipu Beach or Brennecke for actual swimming. But the views are incredible and the units are spacious with full kitchens and private BBQ facilities.
Lawai Beach Resort is where you go if you want great snorkeling right off the property. It’s on 7 acres with 176 condos, and honestly, the sunset views from here are some of the best in Poipu.
Three pools, hot tubs, fitness center, tennis courts, miniature golf, and a rooftop cafe. The barbecue areas are perfect if you’re traveling with another family or two. One and two-bedroom units, all with ocean views and full kitchenettes.
The Smart Money: Vacation Rentals and Condos
This is where I send most families. You get full kitchens, beachfront locations, more space than any hotel, and you’re usually spending less money.
Castle Poipu Shores is about as close to the water as you can get without actually being in it.
You’re a quick walk to basically every good beach in Poipu (Keoneloa Bay, Shipwreck, Brennecke, Poipu Beach), plus Poipu Shopping Village is right there when you need groceries or want to grab dinner.
Every single unit faces the ocean. Ocean-view pool, BBQ area, and full kitchens with washers and dryers. One, two, or three bedrooms depending on what you need. Check current rates
Kiahuna Plantation sits on 35 acres of gardens right on Poipu Beach. This is one of my top picks because you get the Poipu Beach Athletic Club included with your stay.
That means a huge resort pool with a waterslide (my kids could live there), sand-bottom kiddie pool, hot tub, and ten tennis courts.
The property itself doesn’t have AC (pretty common for older Poipu properties), but the ceiling fans and cross-breeze work fine.
You’re steps from the beach, Poipu Shopping Village is across the street, and every unit has a full kitchen with Hawaiian coffee.
Important note: Kiahuna Plantation is managed by Castle Resorts, but some units are also managed through Outrigger. They share facilities but have different management. Just know that when you’re booking. Check current rates
Kuhio Shores is literally ten steps from the ocean. You can watch surfers at PK’s (Prince Kuhio surf spot) from your lanai while you’re drinking your morning coffee. The sound of the waves will put you to sleep at night.
There’s no pool here, but you’re so close to the water that you really don’t need one.
Everything else is close too: golf courses, restaurants, shopping. One or two bedrooms, full kitchens, private balconies. Check current rates
Poipu Palms only has 12 condos, which makes it way quieter than the bigger properties. If you’re the type who wants to avoid crowds, this is your spot.
Gorgeous oceanfront pool with incredible views.
Two-bedroom units with full kitchens, pull-out sofas, and private lanais where you can watch for sea turtles and whales (in season). We’ve seen both from the lanai here. Check current rates
When You’re Ready to Splurge on a Resort
Sometimes you just want someone else to do everything. Make your bed, bring drinks to the pool, handle all the details. I completely understand.
Here’s where to spend your money if you’re going the resort route.
The Grand Hyatt Kauai is where we always end our trips. After a week of cooking and doing laundry in a condo, we’ll book a few nights here and just… not do anything. Let someone else handle it all.
My kids are obsessed with the pool complex. There’s a lazy river where they can float for hours, a saltwater lagoon with an actual sandy beach, a waterslide, and it’s all open 24 hours. We’ve gone down there at 10pm just because we could.
The luau on Wednesdays and Sundays is legit. Real Hawaiian buffet, craft cocktails, Polynesian dance shows. Not the touristy version, the good version.
Seven restaurants (Tidepools for seafood is incredible), full spa, 18-hole golf course, tennis, water sports. They just won Good Housekeeping’s 2026 Travel Awards, which honestly doesn’t surprise me.

The Sheraton Kauai sits right on Poipu Beach. We really love their luau and the beach area here is perfect if you’ve got little kids.
The water’s calm, there’s plenty of room to spread out, and RumFire restaurant has some of the best sunset views in Poipu.
It’s 20 acres on the south shoreline. Two outdoor pools, beach activity center, and that oceanfront luau I mentioned. More affordable than the Grand Hyatt, which makes it a solid middle-ground option.
Rooms are modern with flat-screen TVs and mini-fridges. You can choose ocean view or garden view depending on your budget. Check current rates
Ko’a Kea Resort is my pick for couples without kids. It’s only 121 rooms, which gives it this intimate boutique feel that the bigger resorts can’t match. Way quieter, more romantic, still right on Poipu Beach.
Red Salt Restaurant does Hawaiian seafood for breakfast and dinner. They just refreshed all the rooms too, so everything’s updated.
Beach-chic decor, AC (not all Poipu properties have this), Nespresso machines, plush robes, premium toiletries.
Every room has either a balcony or patio. It’s the kind of place where you can actually relax instead of fighting crowds. Check current rates
What to Actually Do in Poipu
You’re going to see the Spouting Horn Blowhole at some point.
It’s free, it’s on the way to everything, and honestly it never gets old watching that water shoot 50 feet in the air when the waves crash.
There’s a lava tube running from the ocean into the rocks, and the physics of it all is pretty cool.
Do the luau at the Grand Hyatt or Sheraton. I don’t care if you think luaus are touristy. These ones are good.
Traditional buffet, real Hawaiian food, craft cocktails, Polynesian dance shows. We go every single trip and my kids still talk about it months later.
Allerton Garden is where they filmed scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean and Jurassic Park. It’s 80 acres and absolutely gorgeous.
McBryde Garden is another 200 acres if you’re really into tropical plants. Both worth the visit if gardens are your thing.
The beaches in Poipu are why you’re here. Poipu Beach Park is the main family beach with calm water and lifeguards.
You’ll also find Kiahuna, Brennecke, and Baby Beach nearby. We usually hit a different beach each day just to mix it up.
Food-wise, Puka Dog and Waikomo Shave Ice are non-negotiable stops. For sit-down meals, Brennecke’s Beach Broiler, Ilima Terrace (at the Grand Hyatt), and Keoki’s Paradise are our go-to spots with kids.
The Shops at Kukui’ula has boutiques, restaurants, and art galleries. They do a Kauai Culinary Market every Wednesday with local vendors, live music, and food demonstrations. Good place to grab dinner and walk around.
My Actual Recommendations
After 40+ trips to Kauai and probably way too much time thinking about where families should stay in Poipu, here’s what I tell people:
If your kids are under 10 and you want the full resort experience, the Grand Hyatt is worth the money. That pool complex alone will keep them entertained for days.
We always end our Kauai trips there for a few nights and it feels like a proper vacation ending.
If you want to save money and have more space, Kiahuna Plantation is your best bet. You get beach access, that great athletic club with the pool and waterslide, and full kitchens in every unit.
The money you save on food alone makes up for not having resort amenities.
And if it’s just you and your partner without kids, Ko’a Kea gives you that intimate, romantic vibe without the crowds. Way quieter than the big resorts.
But honestly? The sunny South Shore weather, calm beaches, and gorgeous scenery make Poipu pretty hard to mess up. You’re going to have a great time regardless of where you stay.
