The best 10-day Hawaii itinerary for a family visiting two islands is 5 days on Oahu and then 5 days on Maui or Kauai, with one hotel on each island.

Put the busy island first, fly to the second island on the morning of day 6, and keep the second half of the trip slow. Ten days is the minimum I suggest for island hopping. Twelve or 14 is easier.
I’m a Hawaii travel consultant for families and the host of the Hawaii Travel Made Easy podcast, and I’ve done three two-island trips with my own kids. The most recent was Oahu and Maui with my oldest son in February 2026.
This post is a framework, not a full day-by-day. It covers how to split the days, where to stay, which part of each island to see each day, and what to skip. The detailed itineraries are in my paid guides, and I’ll point you to the right one further down.
Still deciding whether to island hop at all? Start with should you island hop in Hawaii with kids.
This episode covers something this post doesn’t: how I’d decide between one island and two for different trip lengths.
How should you split 10 days between two Hawaiian islands?
I usually say 5 and 5. My rule is 5 to 7 days per island when you’re island hopping, and 10 days gets you to the low end of that on both islands.
I change the split when a family has specific things they want to do on one island, like Pearl Harbor or the Road to Hana. Then the island with more activities gets more days.
| Your trip | How I’d split it |
|---|---|
| Less than 10 days | Stay on one island |
| 10 days, Oahu plus Maui or Kauai | 5 and 5 |
| 10 days, and most of your must-dos are on one island | 6 and 4, with the extra day on the island with more activities |
| 10 days, you’ve been to Hawaii before, and the Big Island is new to you | 7 on the Big Island and 3 on Maui or Oahu |
| 12 to 14 days | 6 or 7 on each island |
Shorter Hawaii stays are trending in 2026. If yours is shorter than 10 days, I’d pick one island.
In hotel nights, 5 and 5 usually works out to 5 nights on the first island and 4 on the second. A lot of families take a red-eye home on day 10, and I’ll get to that day further down.
My February trip wasn’t an even split. It was 6 days on Oahu and 4 on Maui. It was a content trip, which means we rushed around to get as much as we could for this blog, Instagram, and my podcast.
Oahu just has SO many activities, and we still didn’t get to everything on my (long) list. Maui was intentionally set up as the vacation part of our trip.
We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach and the Hyatt Regency Maui, and I booked both on Hyatt points.

Which two islands work best together for families?
For most families, it’s Oahu plus either Maui or Kauai.
Most of my clients start with Oahu. They want to visit Pearl Harbor, or they feel like they have to. They want to see Waikiki Beach, or they want to stay at Disney’s Aulani. Then they pick a second island.
| Pair | What you get | How I’d split 10 days | Where I’d stay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oahu + Maui | Culture and history, then beaches and resorts | 5 and 5 | Waikiki, then Kihei or Wailea |
| Oahu + Kauai | City and Pearl Harbor, then nature | 5 and 5 | Waikiki, then Kapaʻa or Lihuʻe |
| The Big Island + Maui or Oahu | The volcano, plus an island you already know | 7 and 3 | Kona and Hilo on the Big Island. Kihei, Wailea, or Waikiki on the other |
The right second island depends on your family. If you’re stuck, I compare them in Maui or Oahu for families and Oahu or Kauai with kids.
My own two-island trips all had family reasons behind them. Right after Covid, we did Kauai to visit my mom, who lives there, and then Oahu to meet up with my husband’s extended family for a multi-gen trip. In 2021 I took my youngest to the Big Island when he was 5, and then we flew over to Oahu to meet my husband and my oldest.

Which island should you visit first?
Do Oahu first. Most families have a list of activities and attractions there, so get those done at the start of the trip.
Then ease up on the schedule for the second island so you can relax and enjoy it.
That’s how I set up February with my oldest. Oahu was the busy half, and Maui was the vacation.
What does the day you change islands look like?
You lose about half a day, even though the flight is short. You have to check out, return the rental car, get to the airport, fly, pick up a new car, and wait for your room. I tell people to plan on 4 to 6 hours.
The flight itself is under an hour between any two of the main islands.
Hawaiian Airlines has the most inter-island flights. Southwest only flies between Honolulu and the neighbor islands now, which is fine for a trip that starts on Oahu.
Two things changed in 2026 that you should know about.
Hawaiian now makes you check in and drop your bags at least 50 minutes before a neighbor island flight. It used to be 30 minutes. That started October 3, 2026.
And Southwest raised its checked bag fees. On inter-island flights it’s $30 for the first bag and $40 for the second if you booked on or after April 9, 2026.
Inter-island fares run about $80 to $200 per person each way.
I’d book a morning flight and not plan a big activity for that day. I once waited more than an hour at a rental car counter on Maui, and your room may not be ready when you get to the hotel.
This is how ours went in February. We had a morning flight out of Honolulu. When we landed on Maui, we headed straight to Kihei to get fish tacos at Coconut’s Fish Cafe. My son got a burger next door at Peggy Sue’s.
Then we headed up to the Hyatt, dropped our bags, and got shave ice. By then our room was ready, so we went up to get settled. I walked around while my son did screens in the room.
That was our whole day.

What does 5 days on Oahu and 5 days on Maui look like?
Stay in Waikiki for the Oahu half and in Kihei or Wailea for the Maui half. Plan one part of the island per day and no more than one big activity per day.
With only 4 or 5 nights on Oahu, I’d stay in Waikiki. My guide to where to stay on Oahu covers Ko Olina and the North Shore for longer trips.
On Maui, I’d stay in Kihei or Wailea because they’re more centrally located. I compare the areas in where to stay on Maui with kids.
In February we were up in KaÊ»anapali, because that’s where the Hyatt Regency Maui is. If I were picking by location for a 4 or 5 night stay, I’d pick Kihei or Wailea.
This is the whole trip in one table. It shows which part of the island to be on each day, not what to do there.
| Day | Where you sleep | Part of the island | Big activities |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Waikiki | Arrive, Waikiki Beach, early night | 0 |
| 2 | Waikiki | Pearl Harbor and Honolulu | 1 |
| 3 | Waikiki | Beach and pool day, luau at night if Oahu is your luau island | 0 or 1 |
| 4 | Waikiki | North Shore | 1 |
| 5 | Waikiki | East side, or one booked activity | 1 |
| 6 | Kihei or Wailea | Morning flight to Maui, lunch, then the pool | 0 |
| 7 | Kihei or Wailea | Beach and pool | 0 |
| 8 | Kihei or Wailea | One outing, your pick | 1 |
| 9 | Kihei or Wailea | Beach and pool | 0 |
| 10 | Red-eye home | Check out, easy last day | 0 |
For Pearl Harbor, reserve the USS Arizona Memorial program on Recreation.gov. The National Park Service strongly recommends reservations. There’s a $1 booking fee, parking is $7 a day, and bags aren’t allowed inside, as of October 2026. The park’s visitor page has the current details.

Day 8 on Maui is for the one thing your family really wants. That could be the Road to Hana, Haleakala, or a boat tour.
If it’s sunrise at Haleakala, you need a reservation to enter the park between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. They’re released up to 60 days ahead on Recreation.gov, with more released 48 hours ahead, as of October 2026. The park explains it here.
Want a much busier Maui half? My 5-day Maui itinerary has one.
How does the plan change if your second island is Kauai?
The Oahu half stays the same, and on Kauai I’d stay in KapaÊ»a or LihuÊ»e. With only 4 or 5 nights, I want the central location, because both ends of the island are day trips from there.
That’s different from what I tell families who are spending a full week or more on Kauai. I usually send them to PoÊ»ipu.
Days 6 through 10 follow the same pattern as the Maui half. Fly over on the morning of day 6. Give Waimea Canyon and the west side one day, give the North Shore another day, and put a beach or pool day between them.

Never put Waimea Canyon and the North Shore on the same day. The drive between them is more than two hours each way.
October 2026 update: Kokeʻe Road is closed until further notice after Hurricane Lowell, and Haʻena State Park and most other Kauai state parks are closed too. Check Hawaii State Parks before you plan a west side or North Shore day.
On our Kauai and Oahu trip, we stayed at the Grand Hyatt Kauai. We mostly just drove around the island and tried to shop at resident-owned businesses. That matters even more right now, while Kauai is recovering.
Then on Oahu we stayed at the ʻAlohilani in Waikiki. We did a lot of family hangout time at the beach and dinners, but we managed to do a North Shore day. My kids were 4 and 7.
I map out a full Kauai week in How to Structure 5 to 7 Days on Kauai With Kids.
What if one of your two islands is the Big Island?
Give the Big Island 7 days. The distances are a lot bigger than on the other islands.
A lot of families are trying to add the Big Island to their itinerary right now, simply because Kilauea has been erupting a lot. But they often can only give it 1 or 2 days.
Kilauea has been erupting in episodes since December 2024, with pauses of two weeks or more in between. As of October 3, 2026, it’s paused. So even if you make the trip, you might not see lava. The USGS posts daily updates.

If you’ve already been to Hawaii and the Big Island is a new island for you, I’d spend 7 days there and 3 on Maui or Oahu. You won’t have a long list of must-dos on an island you’ve already seen.
More on why in how many days the Big Island needs.
With a full week, I usually split it between Kona and Hilo. I explain that in Kona or Hilo: where to stay on the Big Island and in Big Island Itinerary With Kids: When to Split Your Stay and When Not To.
If you can only give the Big Island 4 or 5 nights, stay in Kona the whole time. You can still day trip to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It’s 2 to 2.5 hours each way, depending on where you’re staying.
I’d skip Hilo on a short stay. The exception is if you’re staying in Waikoloa and want to see the waterfalls on your way to the park, because it’s on the way.
When I took my youngest at 5, we did the Big Island first. Then we flew to Oahu for a split stay in Waikiki and at Disney’s Aulani. We were on the Big Island for a week and Oahu for another week.
These layouts tell you which part of each island to see, not what to do once you’re there. For that, my Hawaii island hopping guide has 1, 2, and 3 day itineraries for each island. With 4 or 5 days, pick the day itineraries that look most interesting to your family, or mix and match the activities. It’s $29.99.
How many hotels should you book on a two-island trip?
One hotel per island. With 4 or 5 nights on an island, I wouldn’t move hotels.
One of my clients was doing the Big Island first. She had a split stay there, and that made sense to me. Then she headed to Maui for six nights.
Her plan was 2 nights in KaÊ»anapali, 2 nights in Wailea, 1 night in Hana, and then back to KaÊ»anapali for the last night. That’s four check-ins in six nights.
She thought she had to stay the night in Hana if she wanted to drive the Road to Hana. You don’t.
Her days had a second problem. There were no drive times anywhere.
One line just said Haleakala sunrise, 5 a.m. Sunrise up there is anywhere from about 5:40 a.m. in summer to almost 7 a.m. in winter. And she’d be driving from KaÊ»anapali. The National Park Service says to allow 3.5 hours to the summit from Lahaina.
Another line said Road to Hana, 7 a.m. The Road to Hana starts in Paʻia, and Paʻia is about 50 minutes from Kaʻanapali before traffic.
We switched it so she stayed in Wailea the whole time. She was a lot happier. She wanted some resort time, and that wasn’t happening in her original itinerary.
I usually recommend hotels over condos because Hawaii has so many illegal vacation rentals. If you do rent, make sure it’s a legal one. I prefer VRBO and Booking.com for that.
What would I skip on a two-island trip?
I’d skip the second luau, the big drives you don’t really care about, and any third island.
Definitely only do one luau, unless you’re crazy like me and love them.
I’d also skip the Road to Hana and Haleakala if you don’t have a strong desire to go. A lot of people just think they’re supposed to check them off a list.
Skip Hilo too, unless you’re staying in Waikoloa and it’s on your way to the national park.
And don’t add a third island. I rarely recommend three, even with two weeks. I once tried Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island in 7 days. We were packing every other day, and my kids were cranky from all the moving.
What do you do on the last day if your flight home is a red-eye?
Check out, get your bags somewhere safe, and plan a day that won’t leave you sandy or sweaty.
Lately most of my clients are taking the red-eye home, and so am I. It’s a lot cheaper and there are more flight options. You also get one more day in Hawaii out of it.
It’s a tricky day because of the luggage, though.
I try to leave our luggage with bell services at our hotel. I only do that if the hotel is near the things we’re doing that day.
If it isn’t, the bags stay in the trunk, and I make sure we don’t open it at any of our stops. You don’t want to show a whole parking lot that all your luggage is in the car.
And if we won’t have a way to get cleaned up before the flight, I pick things where we won’t get too dirty. Usually that’s some sort of tour, shopping, or eating at a nice restaurant.
This is what my son and I did on our last day on Maui in February. It was a Sunday.
We ended up packing up around 11 a.m. and headed to Cafe O’Lei at the Plantation for lunch. I made the reservation that morning.
Then we walked around Makawao Town. Since it was Sunday, a lot of things were closed.
From there we drove through Upcountry to the ʻUlupalakua Ranch Store for snacks. We also bought Maui Gold pineapple to bring home at the Maui Pineapple Store.
We fit in the Ê»Iao Needle too. I made that reservation the same morning. Out-of-state visitors need an advance reservation, and it’s $5 per person plus $10 for parking, as of October 2026. Here’s what to expect at Ê»Iao Valley with kids.
Our last stop was Foodland for musubi and airplane snacks. Then we returned the rental car.
We had literally done everything we wanted, and we still got to the airport 3 hours early. Everything was closed for the night and we were tired.
So don’t count on filling every hour until your flight. Check which day of the week your last day is, and expect to be at the gate early.

What should you book first for a two-island trip?
Book your flights to Hawaii first, then your two hotels, then the inter-island flight and your rental cars.
Fly into your first island and home from your second. That way you only take one inter-island flight.
When you price the flight home, look at the red-eye. That’s what most of my clients are booking lately, and it’s what I book too.
Budget about 19% in lodging taxes on top of your room rates in 2026, including the Green Fee.
You’ll rent a car on each island. Compare rates at Discount Hawaii Car Rental before you book.
After that, book the one or two things that need a reservation, like Pearl Harbor. Leave the rest open.
Two islands costs more than one. If you want to see the numbers before you commit, use my free Hawaii family budget planner.
How do you fill in each day?
If you want the days handed to you, my island hopping guide has the short itineraries for each island, plus island pairings and an inter-island flight guide.
If you built your own plan, or had AI rough one out, have someone who knows the islands check it. My client’s plan is a good example. Nothing on it had a drive time.
My itinerary review is $50, and it covers island hopping trips. You send me a Google Doc or PDF with up to 5 questions, and I send back comments on your document within 2 business days.
If you’re still choosing your islands, a one-on-one consultation is the better fit.

10 days in Hawaii on two islands: FAQ
What is the best 10-day Hawaii itinerary for a family visiting two islands?
The best 10-day Hawaii itinerary for a family visiting two islands is 5 days on Oahu followed by 5 days on Maui or Kauai. Stay in one hotel on each island, see one part of the island per day, and plan one big activity per day at most. Do Oahu first, because that’s where most families have their list of attractions, and slow down on the second island.
Is 10 days enough for two Hawaiian islands?
Yes. Ten days is the minimum I suggest for island hopping, and it works best as 5 days on each island. Twelve or 14 days is easier. With less than 10 days, I’d stay on one island.
Which Hawaiian island should you visit first on a two-island trip?
Visit Oahu first. Most families have a list of activities and attractions there, like Pearl Harbor and Waikiki Beach. Then ease up on the schedule for the second island so you can relax.
Do you have to stay overnight in Hana to drive the Road to Hana?
No. You can drive the Road to Hana as a day trip from Wailea or Kihei. One of my clients had booked a night in Hana because she thought she had to, and we changed her plan so she stayed in Wailea the whole time.
Can you add the Big Island to a Hawaii trip for 1 or 2 days?
One or two days is a lot less than I’d plan. I usually suggest 7 days on the Big Island because of the distances. If you’ve been to Hawaii before and the Big Island is new to you, spend 7 days there and 3 on Maui or Oahu.
How long does it take to fly between Hawaiian islands?
The flight is under an hour between any two of the main islands. Door to door, changing islands takes 4 to 6 hours once you count checkout, the rental car return, the airport, and check-in at your next hotel. Hawaiian Airlines requires check-in and bag drop at least 50 minutes before departure, as of October 2026.
The order is the part I’d get right before anything else. Do the island with your must-do list first, and let the second island be the vacation. That’s how I set up my own Oahu and Maui trip in February, and it’s what I tell my clients.
I really hope this post helps you figure out your 10-day Hawaii vacation with kids!
