Spring is in the air, and that always makes me think of all the beautiful flowers in Hawaii.
So, I thought I’d share a super cute Hawaiian craft for kids involving my favorite fragrant flower: the plumeria!
In this post, you’ll learn how to make paper flowers that look just like what you’ll see in Hawaii, especially at the Moloka’i Plumeria Farm.
This paper flower tutorial is really simple (especially once you get going), but the results of the paper plumeria flowers are pretty adorable.
I think think this is one of the best Hawaiian craft ideas for summer parties and backyard luaus. You can attach these Hawaiian plumeria flowers to string to make a garland or glue them onto goodie bags.
I’m even including a Hawaii paper flower template, free for you to use as much as you like!

How to Make a Paper Flower
Step 1:
Select a colored craft paper for the large petals and a lighter shade of yellow colored paper for the small petals (inner layers).
Usually, plumeria flowers are either white, pink, or orange-pink for the petals.
Select green paper for the leaves. Trace and cut out the patterns from the provided paper plumeria template and cut them out nicely.
Step 2:
Attach the small petal cutouts to the large petal cutouts on the bottom end (the pointy side). This will create a 2-layer effect.
Step 3:
Use a round object (pen or pencil will do) to curve the paper petals. Simply give the petals a nice curve along the middle line.
This will give your paper flower a little bit of a 3-D effect.
Step 4:
Now we’re going to start creating our flower. Grab any 2 petals and join them together side by side, keeping either one of them to the front.
Overlap the petals by about a centimeter, but not more than that.
Step 5:
Now, keep going and join the rest of the petals in the same way. Remember to keep the petals overlapped with the next one to form a round pattern.
Step 6:
For the last petal, if it’s under the previous one, it should be over the next one (the first petal), and if it’s over the previous one, it should be under the next one (the first petal).
That way, all petals should be nestled in the same direction for a cohesive look.
Step 7:
For the final touch, cut out the leaf patterns from green colored paper and attach them underneath the plumeria paper flowers.
And that’s it! Play around with different colors for the petals to see what you like. This is an easy one to prep for kids to glue together on their own.
