My grandmother had a home on Kauai when I was growing up.
I’ve been visiting since I was 10, spent summers here as a teenager, and now I bring my own boys.
After 30+ trips, I know which activities actually deliver and which ones waste your money.
People assume Kauai is just for honeymooners. It’s not.
This island is incredible for families. Way fewer crowds than Maui, you can actually spread out at the beach, and my kids have had adventures here they won’t shut up about.
I’m a Certified Hawaii Destination Specialist and what I call a professional tourist (40+ Hawaii visits will do that).
This is everything worth doing on Kauai with kids, including the stuff tourists miss.

Beaches Your Kids Will Love
Poipu Beach Park
The family beach on the South Shore. There’s a natural wading pool behind rocks where even nervous parents relax.
Playground from 2018 still gets tons of use. Clean bathrooms. Lifeguards on duty.

Water stays shallow way out. Monk seals show up regularly (stay 50 feet back).
Green sea turtles have this thing where they appear around 3pm. My kids know to scan the beach then.
Weekends get crazy with birthday parties. Weekday mornings are calmer.
Lydgate Beach Park
My childhood beach. Mom packed sandwiches, we stayed all day. Two rock lagoons meant she wasn’t panicking every time we got near water.

Kamalani Playground is wooden, older, but kids spend hours there. Coastal path works for morning walks or bikes when jet lag has everyone up at 5am.
Close to Lihue airport. We stop here last day so kids can run before being stuck on a plane.
Salt Pond Beach Park
Tourists skip this Hanapepe beach. That’s why locals go. The reef makes water super calm. Tidepool has moray eels, starfish, sea cucumbers kids can see without snorkel gear.

You can watch people making traditional Hawaiian salt. They’ve done it for generations. Just observe from a distance.
Hanalei Beach
North Shore, you’ll be here a lot. Soft sand for building. Hanalei Bay keeps water calm. Mountains in the background.

We get food truck lunch, bring it here. Then Wishing Well Shave Ice after. My kids ask about this before we even land in Hawaii.
More North Shore ideas in my Hanalei guide.
Baby Beach & Anini Beach
Baby Beach in Poipu: water so protected that actual babies play there. Tiny. Hidden (yellow pipe on Ho’ona Road). Never crowded.
Anini Beach in Princeville: longest fringing reef on Kauai. Really shallow. Chickens everywhere (my youngest loved this). You can camp here.
Feeling overwhelmed? I do personalized Hawaii consultations where I build custom itineraries based on your kids’ ages and what your family actually likes.
Activities Actually Worth the Money
Mountain Tubing
My boys’ favorite Kauai thing ever. You float through old sugar plantation canals and tunnels wearing a headlamp. Feels like you’re in an adventure movie.

I thought my 6-year-old would freak out in the dark tunnels. He loved it. Guides are great with kids. It’s a lazy river through jungle with history.
Takes 3 hours. They feed you lunch. Book a month out minimum because this sells out.
Luaus
Yeah, luaus feel touristy. But after dozens across Hawaii, Kauai has two genuinely good ones.
Smith Family Garden Luau: same family for 60+ years. I went as a kid. Now I take my kids. Shows Polynesian and Asian cultures (Hawaii’s actual story). You can do the Fern Grotto boat ride before.

Luau Kalamaku: more theatrical. Moana fans will get the voyager story. Plantation train before lets you feed pigs. My kids talked about those pigs for weeks.
Smith’s is traditional. Kalamaku is Disney-ish. Both good.
Food Tours
Can’t keep up with every restaurant and food truck. That’s why we did a Tasting Kauai tour on the North Shore.

Portions are big enough to share. Kids have space to run at each stop. We went back to half the places on our own later. Pizza from a gas station was surprisingly good.
Water Activities
Wailua River for kayaking with kids. Rent gear or book a guided tour to waterfalls.
Sunset boat rides along Na Pali Coast are gorgeous. Most come with food. Good way to see the coast since you can’t drive most of it.
December through April? Book whale watching. We saw humpbacks breach so close my kids still bring it up.
Snorkeling
Taught our kids at Poipu Beach. Clear, calm, you see fish immediately. Older kids who swim well can handle Tunnels Beach on the North Shore (current can be strong though).
Grab gear at any ABC Store or book a snorkeling tour that knows the good spots.
Complete Kauai snorkeling guide.
Top Attractions
Waimea Canyon
“Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” It’s stunning. Drive up is windy (bring motion sickness meds if your kids get carsick). Views are unreal.

2025-2026 UPDATE: Main lookout closed for construction since July 2025, should reopen January 2026. Other lookouts like Puu Hinahina still open. Canyon trails still open. Less construction traffic on weekends.
Kokee State Park is right past the canyon. Gets cold up there (bring layers). Good for birdwatching and hiking.
Fern Grotto
Can’t go inside the grotto anymore (viewing platform only). But the boat ride there is half the fun. Live Hawaiian music and hula on the boat. Kids loved it.
Touristy but a classic Kauai thing. We usually pair it with Smith Family Luau since same family runs both.
Waterfalls
Waterfalls everywhere on Kauai. Gets more rain than almost anywhere on earth, so water just cascades all over.

Easiest: Wailua Falls and Opaekaa Falls (both roadside). More adventure: hike to Hanakapiai Falls (serious trek though).
Kilauea Lighthouse
Historic lighthouse over 100 years old. Wildlife refuge. Good birdwatching. Kids can run around the grounds. Views are great.
Spouting Horn
Water shoots through a natural blowhole. Kids love this. Most dramatic when tide’s in.

Lots of souvenir stands here if you need last-minute gifts for people back home.
Kauai Coffee Company
Self-guided walking tour is free. Tons of coffee samples. Made-on-Kauai products in the gift shop.

For kids 8+, they have a farm tour about how coffee’s made. My boys found it interesting. I left with too much coffee.
Lydgate Farms Chocolate Tour
If your kids are chocolate obsessed: book this. 3-hour tour through botanical gardens. Taste Kauai honey, vanilla, tropical fruits, chocolate.

Learn how they make chocolate from raw cacao fruit. Educational and delicious.
Food Experiences
Food Trucks
Kauai’s food truck scene is great. Hanalei: Hanalei Taro & Juice Company, Holey Grail Donuts. Kapaa: Wailua Shave Ice, Al Pastor Tacos. Lawai: Kickshaw’s.
Get picnic lunch, eat at beach.
Shave Ice
Daily requirement for my kids. Wishing Well in Hanalei is my favorite (organic options, huge servings). Wailua Shave Ice in Kapaa has kid sizes. Waikomo Shave Ice in Poipu uses all-natural flavors, sells souvenir coconut bowls.
Local Treats
Kauai Kookie factory in Hanapepe: free samples including flavors they don’t sell anywhere else. Amazing cinnamon toast too.

Malasadas (Portuguese donuts) from local bakeries. Best eaten warm same day. Some filled with coconut, mango, guava.
Outdoor Adventures
Hiking
Na Pali Coast hike to Hanakapiai Beach is beautiful but challenging. Easier options: Sleeping Giant trail, waterfall hikes.
Helicopter Tours
Helicopter ride over Kauai shows views you can’t see any other way. Secret waterfalls, Na Pali Coast, Waimea Canyon.
Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Also yes.
If helicopters make you nervous, scenic flights are smoother.
Ziplining & ATVs
Older kids and teens: zipline through jungles. Best scenery in Hawaii for this.
Want muddy and fast? Kipu Ranch ATVs tear through mountains. Wear clothes you’re okay ruining.
Horseback Riding & Trains
Kauai has whole cowboy history (Hawaiian cowboys called paniolos). Book horseback riding to see different views.
Younger kids not ready for horses? Kilohana Plantation train is a hit. Ride around plantation, learn about Hawaiian fruits, feed animals halfway through.
Surfing Lessons
Surfing was invented in Hawaii. Book lessons and let your kids brag they learned in Hawaii.
Free Stuff & Budget Activities
Beaches & Playgrounds
All beaches free (some parking fees for non-residents).

Anaina Hou Community Park in Kilauea: playground, mini golf, hiking trails. All free.
The playground was built in 2018 with partly recycled milk jugs. Kind of cool.
Free Hula Shows
Skip luau cost, catch free shows. Coconut Marketplace in Kapaa: Wednesday 5pm, Saturday 1pm. Poipu Shopping Village: Monday and Thursday 5pm with Tahitian dancing and fire knife dancers.
Farmers Markets & Food
Give kids cash, let them pick tropical fruit at farmers markets. Kauai Culinary Market at Shops at Kukuiula: Wednesday 3:30-6pm with cooking demos.
Sunrise & Rainbows
East Shore for sunrise (you’ll be awake from jet lag anyway). Make a game of spotting rainbows. Double rainbows are common. Triple rainbows happen. Kids still get excited every time.
Glass Beach & Tide Pools
Glass Beach is treasure hunting for kids. Colorful beach glass everywhere. Leave most of it there or take just a few pieces.
Salt Pond Beach has tide pools where kids see marine life without snorkel gear.
Hanapepe Town
Quaint art town with galleries, unique shops, Hanapepe Swinging Bridge (kids love running across). Don’t miss Lilo & Stitch photo wall.
Special Experiences
Family Photo Shoots
I always book Flytographer on Hawaii trips. Guarantees I’m in some vacation photos.

They know best spots. We end with shave ice, which makes great candid shots.

National Tropical Botanical Garden in one of most bio-diverse valleys in Hawaii. Self-guided tour through lush forest. Easy trails. Ocean view at end.
Classes & Tours
Learn ukulele at Coconut Marketplace (free weekday classes). Make Hawaiian flower lei crown. Private family yoga on beach.
Movie buffs: Kauai movie tours show where Jurassic Park, Pirates of the Caribbean, other films were shot.
Kauai Humane Society Dogs
Take rescue dog out for day of adventure. Bring them hiking, to beach, wherever. Fall in love? Adopt them. Best souvenir ever.
Learn about field trip program.
Where to Stay
Grand Hyatt Kauai

Royal Sonesta Kaua’i Resort Lihue
On Kalapaki Beach. Kid-friendly beach. Restaurants on-site. Close to everything in Lihue.
The Cliffs at Princeville
North Shore condos. One and two-bedroom units with kitchens. Great for picky eaters.
All my Kauai resort recommendations.
Planning Questions
Maui or Kauai for kids?
Both good. Maui has more resorts and kid beaches. Kauai has fewer crowds, more adventure, laid-back vibe that makes family travel easier.
Best time to visit?
April through October is drier. But honestly? Kauai’s beautiful year-round. Rain means more waterfalls. December through April brings humpback whales. Good trips every season.
How many days?
At least 5-7 days. Kauai’s small enough to drive around but has so much to see. More than a long weekend.
First time?
Stay East Shore (Lihue/Kapaa area) or South Shore (Poipu) for best weather and easy access to activities. North Shore is gorgeous but gets more rain.
Real Talk
After 30+ trips and hundreds of hours on Kauai with my family, this island gets better every time. There’s always new food trucks, another beach to find, adventures we haven’t done.
Don’t try to do everything. Pick a few must-dos. Leave room for spontaneous shave ice stops. Give yourself permission to just hang at the beach.
Kauai isn’t about checking boxes. It’s about making memories.
Like when my youngest collected shells for an hour at Poipu Beach. Or double rainbow over Hanalei Bay after quick rain. Or afternoons at Lydgate doing absolutely nothing productive.
That’s Kauai with kids.
